Behind the Scenes NYC Dance Shoot Throwback

Apparently, it’s been years since I’ve taken you behind the scenes of a NYC dance shoot, which means it’s time for a throwback. Here is my first photoshoot with Dorothy Lennox, a dancing, stilt-walking, acting, singing, modeling wonder.

Photographing dancers is a breath of fresh air, because I get to stretch my creativity. It’s an invigorating challenge to create a photograph portraying physical strength, graceful movement, and infectious energy in one moment.

Since my sister is an astonishingly talented dancer (seriously, check out her website; I don’t even know how we’re related) I’ve been photographing dancers for years, yet it never ceases to amaze me what they can do with their bodies.

I show up to the shoot with a camera and a brain full of bright, abstract daydreams of shapes and poses that might not even be physically possible. Then the collaboration begins. I get to dive into the world of dance and toss my vision into the mix (this includes lots of unglamorous demonstrations and occasionally a pulled muscles on my part) and the dancer turns my ideas into magic.

So yeah, photographing dancers? It’s pretty dang awesome.
